National Chung Hsing University Art Center invites renowned international artist who is also the President of National Taiwan University of Arts, Professor Chen Chih-Cheng, to hold the " Documentary Psalms - Chen Chih-Cheng Solo Exhibition" from May 29th to June 28th, 2023. Each artwork in the exhibition faithfully conveys Professor Chen's experiences and observations throughout his life. Through spatial arrangement and interconnected narratives, the exhibition establishes a context that further engages viewers in dialogue and interaction. By utilizing multiple kind of media, Professor Chen constructs his thoughts and concepts, imbuing them with rich emotions, with the aim of guiding viewers to see the world through the perspective of art.
Professor Chen Chih-Cheng has gained international recognition early on in his career. He was invited to participate in various prestigious global exhibitions and events, including the 1993 Video Art Exhibition of Four Young Artists at the National Higher School of Fine Arts in Paris, the 1994 Joint Selection Exhibition of Six Galleries in Brussels, Belgium, the 1994 “Trans-urgency” of Eastern European Biennial in Vrsac, Yugoslavia (now Serbia and Montenegro), the 1994 “Artifices 3” of the 3rd Paris New Technology Computer Image Biennial, the 1994 “Aujourd’hui la video” of 26th International Photography Meeting and Art Season in Arles, France, the 1995 "Art, Technology and Phenomena" of International Art Season in Fribourg, Switzerland, the 1997 "Heaven" exhibition at Museum of Modern Art PS1 in New York, and the "Lightness and Heaviness" exhibition at ARCO in Madrid, Spain. He has also been represented by the Belgian galleries Issy Brachot and Le Monde de l'art.
Professor Chen Chih-Cheng owns multiple roles, including educator, curator, diplomat, cultural policy researcher, and arts management practitioner. He previously served at the Taipei Cultural Center in Paris, where he dedicated himself to promoting cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Europe. In reward of his contributions, he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2015, he took over the position of President of the Taiwan University of Arts, where he has placed particular emphasis on innovative and enlightening art education. He encourages a combination of theory and practice with an empirical approach as the core, advocating for reforms within the educational system to create a teaching and learning environment that fosters artistic development. His goal is to cultivate multidisciplinary and versatile artists with expertise in various fields.
The theme of this exhibition is "Epic Pilgrimage," with documentary approach. Through art, it embarks on a journey around the world, depicting a humanistic map based on the realities of the world. Starting from the beautiful island of Taiwan, it soars over Siberia and encounters the majestic Alps, arriving at the heart of European civilization. Throughout the journey, the artistic exploration covers various countries from Western Europe to Eastern Europe, following this cultural voyage where thoughts, willpower, and creativity traverse the vastness of civilization.
The "Documentary Psalms" series describes the professor's journey of studying abroad, which involved over 10 years of hard work and nonstop effort . After returning to his home country, he spent another 6 years tirelessly reflecting and paying tribute. Now, it is time for the "revealing." We sincerely invite people from all walks of life to come and appreciate the exhibition, embarking on a journey of perceiving the world.
