In celebration of National Chung Hsing University's 104th anniversary, the Art Center is pleased to invite renowned Taiwanese artist, Cheng Tai-Le, to hold the “Beyond Representational: Cheng Tai-Le Calligraphy Art Exhibition” on campus from October 18th to November 18th, 2023. Through nearly seventy pieces of calligraphy and innovative enamel glaze creations, we hope to show the public that calligraphy not only embodies self-cultivation but also harness the “power of words.” By exploring current affairs from the artist’s perspective, this exhibition demonstrates the unique style of using calligraphy to document the times and respond to society.
Prof. Cheng Tai-Le was born in Taipei City in 1957. He holds a DFA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and a MFA from National Taiwan Normal University. He has taught at the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University and the Department of Fine Arts at National Taichung University of Education. In addition, he has served as a judge for national art exhibitions, including the Taiwan Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition, National Fine Arts Exhibition, Chung Shan Art Awards, National Award for Art, Yushan Art Award of Nantou. He has held solo exhibitions more than twenty times and participated in countless group exhibitions both domestically and internationally. His works have received numerous accolades, including the 22nd Jhung Hsing Culture and Art Award (Calligraphy Group), the first place of the calligraphy group at 9th National Fine Arts Exhibition and a permanent qualification of exemption from undergoing review. His calligraphy theses were also honored with awards from Taipei Fine Arts Museum. He has been engaged in art education, painting and calligraphy creation for over forty years.
Imagery possesses infinite creative potential, and artists immerse themselves within it, expressing their thoughts and emotions through their work, which may take on concrete or abstract forms. The exhibited artworks in this collection are predominantly about observations of contemporary social phenomenon and everyday life, integrating the techniques of seal engraving and ink painting. Thick and bold lines create textual imagery while translucent ink shades the background, showcasing the distinctive artistic qualities of calligraphy. After years of experience and practice in both Eastern and Western visual arts, Cheng Tai-Le has created a fresh perspective on the essence of Eastern art.
Art evolves in response to the changing times. From being a means of written communication to becoming a medium of art, calligraphy always carries the spirit of its era. In the past, it was confined by various script structures, but in recent years, it has undergone a transformation, becoming more similar to painting and engaging in a collision between tradition and contemporary art. Welcome everyone to visit and appreciate this exhibition.
