Body Journey―W.J. Hwang’s Exhibition 2021

To celebrate the coming 102nd anniversary of NCHU, the Art Center invited the French-trained artist, Hwang Wey-Jeng, to stage a solo exhibition that demonstrating Professor Hwang’s variety art works from 1974 through the present in a complete package. The particular exhibition have been closely connected to social trends and issues to reveal a deep thinking of surroundings and human relationship, and also to strike a conversation between individual and groups.

Hwang Wey-Jeng(1955- ) was born in Nantou County of Taiwan. He was enlightened by the modern art trailblazer, Lee Chun-sen, and started to concern with the cultivation, imagination and the tapping of sub-consciousness by Surrealist feel. In 1983, Hwang went abroad to study at the Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Beaux-Arts.study in Paris, due to the homesickness, combined with distance from local culture and society, his works were full of pressures, struggles, and tribulations by a most profound affect. Since earning his degree and returning to Taiwan in 1986, Hwang has devoted himself to artistic creation and used to teach at elementary school, Chung Yuan Christian University, National Tsing Hua University, National Taichung University of Education etc.. Despite his heavy teaching responsibilities, he continues to immerse himself in the pursuit of his own art with the observation of social and political changes.

This exhibition offers more than 50 pieces of oil paintings, acrylic paintings, sculptures and porcelain drawings. According to thematic need, Hwang has adopted the styles of such artists as F. Bacon and Valerio Adami to juxtapose sexuality and social issues, exploring the ground and metaphorical space within to achieve a complex emotional tension. Over the course these creations, spiritual struggle triggered by the gap between ideals and reality or the aggravation of creative blocks have always existed. It is also the first time to show new paintings which record Hwang's observation during the epidemic.


" Life is the basis for creation, creation is testimony to life." Prof. Hwang looking back, a stumbling journey of over 45 years has already been covered, and over these decades in investigation in the vast realm of art.  As Duchamp said, it is the eyes of the beholders that create works of art. It offers an outstanding opportunity for viewers to familiarize themselves and hope to build up an indicative and functionality aesthetics space.
